RE:sumi

you can make a kuro sumi wash yourself with the lining black. However, the difference is how the types of greys look when you apply them and how they heal. For example, Talons grey looks a little more on the "brown grey" side when they heal, Sumi has more of an "actual" grey. Pelican has a "bluish" tint when it heals. and so forth. It really depends on the look you like for your greys. Just my two cents.

RE:sumi

Note:
Kuro Sumi is not water soluble.
So when thinning out your black ink or gray wash to make a lighter shade of gray, you should use Witch Hazel which is also a catalyst ingredient in Kuro Sumi ink. Water will not give you the desired results.

RE:sumi

I used distilled water with sumi and it works fine. It is just a matter of fine tuning your technique to make it work. Jeff Gogue uses Kuro Sumi black linning it mixed with distilled water to do his grey was and it looks bad ass.

RE:sumi

I mixed sumi with witch hazel for my grey wash and it had a blue tint. Didn't like that at all. I went back to adding distilled water to my outline ink.
