bug pin???

Okay, just a quick question. Are bugpins and M2 mags the same thing?

The M2 (also known as double stack magnum) also fits in one size smaller (i.e 9 M2 fits 7mag tube) and is grouped a lot tighter then a standard 9 mag.

I have asked a few suppliers that stock bugpin and they dont know so I asked suppliers that refer to it as M2 and they werent sure either. I havent seen any suppliers over here that stick both so I was wondering if they are actually the same thing?

If they are different, then what is the difference between the two in terms of the end result. And when would you use a M2 instead of an M1?

Cheers!

RE:bug pin???

No, M2 doesn't mean its a bug pin. When suppliers say M1 mag it is a regular weaved mag and M2 mag is really two flat groups stacked one on top of the other. e.g. 4 flat on 5 flat is called a 9 mag M2. As for when to use which type, I would say, is a personal preference.

RE:bug pin???

Thanks Helmet.. so is a bug pin then the same as an M1 (in its layout) but uses skinnier/thinner needles therefore fits a smaller tip, or is it only the taper that is different (i.e long taper/short taper).

I would imagine that they are just skinnier but it pays to know for sure. Man when I first started there was such little variety and we just made our own with size 12 needles! Sheesh, times have changed! Hahaa, I am glad, its just hard taking a step backwards to learn everything (without looking like a total douche for not knowing in the first place) and to try and advance/keep up with all the changes!

Cheers for any help though, I really appreciate it!

RE:bug pin???

Yeah, bug pins are smaller diameter needles. Read my post under neo tat-bugpin topic.

RE:bug pin???

i just started using bugpins and am very happy with how much smoother they are. i ordered from mithra and they are i believe an 8 gauge needle long taper compared to a 12 gauge long taper which means they can put more needles in the same amount of area.

bug pin is an ilusion, only give you more resistance

RE:bug pin???

The smaller diameter long taper, allows smoother gradients in the shading, without diluting black... But then that's how it was done when I started in the '70s... If the technique is good and control is there, #8 needles negate the use of washes in most cases.

RE:bug pin???

Do not rely solely on the M2 as being a double stack mag because most companies now use M2 to indicate a MEDIUM TAPERED on the needles and M1 for LONG TAPERED. and these companies are putting DSM to identify DOUBLE STACK MAGS. Also remember that bug pins will most definately allow smoother gradients in shading however you will lose up to 40% of your tone in lighter Values and 20% in your darker values. 10 gauge bug pins I feel are more effective than 08 guage
