color: coil vs rotary

When doing color work, what do you all prefer? Coil machines, or rotary machines. Why?

I recently went all out rotary with 2 stigma Hyper Machines. I love them. I am only about a month in with them however they are very similar to coil machines as comparted to other rotarys I have used. Standard rotartys were just too far off for me to feel comfortable. I was lucky to get to try the stigma hyper before i got mine. The owner of the studio I work at had ordered his stigma's before there were any north american dist. I couldn't see spending the money he did at the time plus exchange rate for a machine. However as soon as I tried them i fell in love! I assume the Swash gen7's are similar with the plates you can change. Honestly If you want to PACK color your coil will do it quicker in my opinion but there is no reason you cannot pack with these rotary/hybrid style machines. May just take a little longer in my experience. I think really it comes down to the tattoo you are doing. No one says you have to throw your coils away once you get a rotary. I had to do a large black piece about a week ago and my coil pulse machine came out and did the job. So i guess try it out for yourself and see what works best. I would assume you could resell the machine at close to the original price if you hated it for some reason. Best of luck!

Different strokes for different folks! They all work good for something. Depends on your style and how you tattoo. When I open my machine drawer to grab what Im gonna use for the day... I don't think about grabbing a coil machine very often anymore, its not that they are bad, just not for me. I like the consistency of a rotary to much. I feel I can go just as fast with a rotary, but its the speed that Im comfortable with. Sure anyone can take any machine and crank it up and go lightening speed fast, but thats only for certain types of tattoos, any time I try and go to fast with my style, something in the piece will suffer. Rotary or coil; you gotta find the right pace for how you work. Theres guys out there doing amazing work with all different kinds of machines. Its something you have to feel out yourself and figure out what you like the best on your own. It does take investing some money, but I think its worth it in the long run, especially if you feel that you need something different.
