inconsistency in how color holds

Ive had this ongoing issue for way too long! over the years ive noticed quite a bit of my color work heals way to light on SOME people, but on more people then i would like to see. most of my tattoos are usually pretty large. I run a Mickey Sharpz machine. Put my color in usually about 8 to 8.4 volts. I do my best to strectch the skin, and circle in my color as saturated as possible with out overworking the skin, with a #12 needle long taper. 7 mags usually. Machine sounds fine nice hmmm....no clanking or spitting ink. I keep my needle at about a nickels worth and it retracts back to my tip fine. I tell people to keep their ointment on lightly for 3 days and follow with lubriderm or coca butter...What the heck am i missing? Should my spring gage be thicker I prefer to keep softer spring? Any advice? what am i missing???

sounds like what your missing is a proper apprenticeship. if you did serve an apprenticeship and your in a shop, ask a co-worker. this is basic info that you should already know, and if not, shouldnt be asked in an open forum. i could tell you just by your description what your doing wrong, but theres too many wanna be tattooers lurking the interwebs for info they have yet to earn. if you have a portfolio, post the link and we can go from there via private emails. that is if your not hacking people up from the dungeon, or kitchen that is.

fizzy, I assure you I am a professioanl working tattoo artist 15 yrs in, this whole thing is really embarassing for me that's really why I havent asked anyone i personally know, but it's been going on way to long and i really need some answers because im sick and tired of all the second session extra work it makes me have to do. I did do an apprenticeship with a guy in the early 90's real old school and ive had to struggle along with alot of pieacing stuff together. What studio are you from? If you really think you have an answer for me I can contact you that way not on this open board...I agree. Do you have a Facebook page by any chance that would be best for me....thanks. Sick of wasting my talent on this lack of knowledge.

hay bud i had this problem, what i found that works really well is a giant gap inbetween your contact screw and front spring with light tension great for colour solid black and white highlights

RE:inconsistency in how color holds

Thanks Cam. Ya know... I have kept a long stroke on my machine I tend to fiddle around with it because my main worry with that is i layer alot, my style is pretty realistic so ive always backed off from that for fear of two much punch and tramatizing the skin. But maybe I will see how far i can take it if that will help my dilema...

oh gawd!..email me with this "secret info" LOL!!...tattooing is everywhere..its not a secret anymore, there are videos,books..seminars every week at conventions all over the world.its 2011 remember?..its not just one thing..its small things that add up to the end result.molly try switching to med tapers for solid color, and spread your mags out more, for more saturation(depending on your mags width and length)try stepping up to 11-15 mags, you should get better results...and yes, even the best artist,do touch ups!!..hope this helps..thats what we are all here for right?...that wasnt a secret =)

Gilbert Torres for president I say! Good info and great attitude mate. I know this post doesn't contribute to the subject but I really like to see such a positive response. Yep, it's 2011 alright and this industry is a changin' fast.

thanx pete!..cheers to you too!.it really doesnt make sense to go on a tattoo forum, and tell someone to contact you on facebook,to talk about tattoos?..if you are a great artist, and have a steady clientele, why worry about other artist getting "secret info".its going to happen anyway.i did a 6 hour one-on- one with mike, and helped me out alot, but will my tattooing ever look like his? .nope! is he worried about me having this "secret info"? nope!..if he was he wouldnt make videos, books on his techniques...what comes around goes around, get in where you fit in.. =)
