Portrait in oil

Hey Mike, (or anyone else with input) How do you go about painting portraits in oil? Do you use wet on wet technique or the more traditional method of waiting for paint to dry and layering? Do you have any order for color, I.E. dark to light or vice versa? Also, do you use any painting medium, and if so what kind? Sorry if it sounds like I want an online art course; I am just asking for a quick rundown of your technique.

RE:Portrait in oil

It all depends on how you like to work, how long it takes to complete a painting, and what your desired goals are? are you a colorist or tonalist? on a real general level, linseed oil (there are other mediums; alot more) and turpentine or turponoid is combined to thin out colors in order for them to flow off the brush better. if your working with thick paint use hog bristle brushes, if your detailing and glazing use sable hair brushes. the key to painting isn't so much about the technique, its more about value and color. so if your really considering painting start there first. via art classes or books or you tube painting demos. good luck
