Tattooing actual Dogs

Just Curious on peoples opinion on tattooing dogs for markings, not artwork. I see some peoples reaction that it's animal cruelty and it's the end of the world. I recently got a phone call in which a lady was asking for a couple numbers to be tattooed on her dog, because the dog was having a reaction to the micro chip they were implanting, but her vet doesn't tattoo. Long story short, I said "sorry we don't do that." But in a case like that, should it be allowed? I understand you need to register the number first before tattooing a dog, and there is a element of filth if you do it in a shop. Some vets do the procedure, but they put the dog under before they do it, tattoo artists don't have access to anesthesia. Im guessing most veterinarians don't know how to tattoo properly. Even if everyone says, yeah just do it, It's something I still wouldn't do, or allow it to be done in my shop, but just curious on thoughts... I already can guess on the responses that will be posted, but let's see.

Well, not thinking about the clean part of this (you'd probably contaminate a lot with a dog in the shop), I think it is okay. But I see a lot of problems there, like you mentioned mike, you cant put them under, they'll probably move a lot so its almnost impoissible to do some clean work. and yeah you know what happens after that, the clients see what shitty tattoos you make and stop coming to your shop xD

Nah still joking, I'd do it if it didn't ruin my shop's hygiene regulation.
I'd do anything to help a dog ^^

.

sorry, i got a bit of a different opinion. as vegetarian animal friend i would say that you could do an operation like this way more animal friendly than some vet- you know all that stuff aboput pain and hygienic stuff,so you would do that probably way better for the animal than a normal vet would do it. i saw vets doing that with an unsterilized kind of pliers with needles attached, which was more than surely not even desinficated. if you have any doubts about contaminating your shop- just malke a home date at the client's flat. i would suggest tests with numbing creams to keep the pet in a kind of relaxed mood.
i think, better someone with a clue does it than some idiot, who doesn't have a clue about tattooing and hygienix.

Strange....
For I, just recently saw a cat with a tattoo....
It was a series of numbers and letters on its stomach...
Quite large too...
This cat is at least 10 years old and it's owner told me that in south Florida that's normal to see on a rescue animal or on that was obtained from an animal shelter.

It was quite a shock to me to say the least.

its legit. but i think it comes down to the moral issue of putting a beloved pet in unnecessary pain.

you might talk to your vet about procuring some ketamine to knock the animal out while your tattooist does the work. and honestly, are you concerned about cleanliness, your dog eats poop and licks his wounds.

to clarify, when i said 'cleanliness' i meant tattoo aftercare for the animal. not the cleanliness of the shop area.

RE:Tattooing actual Dogs

hey I was just talking about something along those lines the other day, I had a dog that I rescued from the RSPCA here in Australia and when they de-sexed it they tattooed a circle with a line through it on the inside of its ear, I have also seen those mini pigs that are heavily tattooed and sold for big $$$ in asia I can't remember if it was Thailand or japan where they do it, I'm not saying I agree with this practice and im sure people have different thoughts on the subject I'm just pointing out that its a common thing in certain parts of the world and I know if one of my dogs had to be tattooed I'd rather have someone who tattoos for a living than someone who doesn't have a clue how to tattoo.

RE:Tattooing actual Dogs

We tattoo, purebred dogs, every day. 8 week old puppies. on the left flank. they lie still and we scribe an ID on them, in case they are lost or stolen. It is a Canadian Kennel Club requirement, I have to do this, or do a painful microchip, before I can sell a puppy. it is done awake, and the pups are quite good about it. the pups are Clean, spotless, and there is no mess.

tattooing animals doesn't have to be as complicated as having a whole setup. you can purchase a one-punch machine to tattoo serial numbers on the inside of the pets ear. humane and one instance of pain for the animal rather than spending a couple minutes drilling.
