Why do I have to keep adjusting my contact screw

Hey everyone. I'm really hoping someone could help me out here. I had a crappy mentor during my apprenticeship who didn't teach me much about machine building. So I had to teach myself. My only problem I have is I find myself constantly having to adjust my contact screw on my liner during a tattoo, even a small sized tattoo. Can someone please help me, I do t understand why this keeps happening

did you build this machine yourself or bought a professional made one or bought a cheap machine? thats the first question. describe your machine. before we jump to your power supply

My current boss gave me the machine, I used the coils and also the front and back binding post with the contact screw that came with the machine. So I basically just changed the a-bar and springs, washers and screws. The contact screw looks like sterling silver and the coils look a bit cheepo.

'do the coils have an e-clip holding the fiber washers in place? do they weigh light? its easy to spot aluminum wire. the feel is smoother than copper. the heart of the machine is the most important part. some machines use straight steel for their contact post so i wouldnt worry so much about that. although, when i first started building machines, i didnt hesitate in ordering top quality parts. its finding a good supplier. i built my machines with eikons blank frame. handwounded my coils myself. my clipcord once was doing weird shit to my machine. the coating on the wire was scratched. and i just recently bought a critical power supply. the chinese power supply i was using did alot of tattoos and still works, although i can hear alot of change in the tune alot more then before. they dont skip a beat with my new power supply. :) study it, machine mecanics are fun. ive spent alot of nights trolling the web

No e clip. And ya it looks and feels like aluminum. Ya I've been spending alot of nights researching for the last couple of years. I agree its alot of fun, I love it. I built my shaders, but dont have the same problem with them as I do with my liner. I'm thinking maybe it's the plastic screw that tightens the contact screw in place. And I use the ems 400 power supply from eikon and I just live it, haven't had any problems with it at all

hey, sounds like its either your contact screw is loosening up or it maybe the coils, if they are cheap coils they will give you uneven flow ,also make sure that there is not any carbon build up on the contact screw and on the tips of your clipcord. if you are into building machines i will suggest that you should stay away from cheap springs as well. first time i built a machine it ran like crap because i didnt know much about springs. that was my hardiest part choosing spring combos that i liked . hang in there you will get it .hope this helps

RE:Why do I have to keep adjusting my contact screw

Thaks so much you guys, everything helps so I really appreciate your guys' suggestions. The springs I use are from workhorse irons. I was looking into also buying coils from them for my liner. Only problem is, I feel like I should just save up some more money and buy alot more parts because there is no Canadian supplier for work horse and they charge $100 just for shipping a set of coils. The springs I've had for a while, I bought a few sets with an old co worker so we just split the shipping. Thought this time I could get away with using the cheep looking coils on the machine I got from my boss. But it probably is a combination of the coils and contact screw loosening. Thanks again for you advice guys, I'll have to get a quality set of coils for sure
