using gray wash with color?

I manly do new school and was taught to always do grey wash for tone before I do my color during my apprenticeship. Ive been tattooing professionally now for about 3 years and feel that when I do grey wash before my colors, that it muddies my tattoos up. And sometimes the color completely covers some of my wash, making it un necessary skin trauma. What are y'all's opinions, should I just practice using my wash with colors better, or just use only colors with color and find a shade of color I need?

I only use graywash for black n grey. Just whip black out as smooth as possible.
I use color as i would use paint. I dip from color into black and back into color. Often i have two or three of the same color out, so i can keep one clean, one for dipping with black and maybe one for white. Allso i have alot of white out. 4 or 5 maybe. I waste alot of ink, but i dont really care. Dont be cheap about it. The faster u use your ink the faster you can get new once... :-)

I dont know how somr people do with washes and color. The healet tattoos ive seen thats been done that way, heals really funny, and often where the greywash is the color falls out.

I don't put graywash under color unless I'm creating a gold metallic look. Using darker and lighter shades of the color give depth and highlight. You want to reduce skin trauma, so by doing graywash first, then going back over with color, it will create more scar tissue, which can give color a cloudy look, or muddy up your detail.
