Wanting opinions on work

My husband was doing an apprenticeship and right after he got done learning all that he needed before he started tattooing his "teacher" up and left. My husband had already ordered everything he needed, and decided to try and teach himself. I have some pictures of some work that he has done and I was wanting to get your guys opinions (link below). I think he is doing great! Especially for just starting and for teaching himself along the way.. I'm sure he'd love any advice from those of you who have been at this for a long time. Here is the link to the first tattoos he's ever done..

Hey there! you ask for it, so here it is: Look up some teqniques on shading and lining. they both need a ton of work. you can google videos. learn your machine/power supply. not setting those properly can cause you to have trouble doing the actual tattoo. start smaller. do small hidden tattoos if people want to let you practice on them. perfect the small things before you take up large spaces on peoples bodies. it would be in your best interest to get an apprenticship as you a far from where you need to be to go anywhere in this industry. this isn't the worst work i have ever seen (no blow outs or infections that i can see) but you have a long ways to go. just my honest opinion. @metalmermadetattoo (instagram)

i forgot to say, for first tattoos ever, you may have some potential. i don't mean to discourage. but getting the proper training will take you much further.

RE:Wanting opinions on work

The guy who he started an apprenticeship under taught him everything he needed to know about the safety part of things..sterilization, etc. He never got hands on with a tattoo gun and never taught him about techniques. My husband googles everything about tattoos, watches videos, buys dvd's, etc. He's always trying to learn as much as he possibly can. He works full time and already paid for an apprenticeship that didn't happen, so that's not an option at the moment. It's himself that he practices on. So, for these being his first tattoos that he's done, first time using a tattoo machine, and never have being taught how to do any of it.. You don't think it's a good start? I never said HE was happy with where he is now, but I do think it's a great start for teaching himself along the way.. Thanks for your opinion.. I know how seriously he takes all of this.

That good to hear that he takes it so seriously! I'm sure if he sticks with it and is that committed he will have no problem one day being successful! I suppose the biggest piece of advise I want to highlight is the part where I said to do small tattoos and Perfect them. Don't try to skip the "easy" looking stuff it will only come back to bite you. In my apprentiship all I did were perfect small tattoos for the first long while. It really helped me to perfect my line work. I promise you will be glad you did in the future when your doing really awesome work and your trying to figure out what to do with the stuff you did while learning! It's also good to see he started with smaller liners... That will leave room to go in on the future and re-line with a fat liner once his line work is perfected. Practice linings on paper regularly. Pulling clean smooth lines is sooooo important. Good luck with your (his) endeavors.
