Taking pictures of fresh tattoos

Hi Mike, Im hoping you might have some tips on photographing a fresh tattoo after its done. I know you touched a little on this in your book and was wondering if you might have any other tricks for keeping out glare and such. I have purchased and tried several cameras over the past couple years and found a likeing to a Canon Power shot and recently purchased a Nikon D3000 digital SLR. The problem I am having is when I am unable to get a picture during the day and am forced to take one inside or at night. Our shop is well lit but it seems no matter how or where I stand there is always flash glare or without the flash the tattoo looks washed out or fuzzy. I sometimes will take dozens of pictures and am sometimes lucky to get one that is portfolio quality. I have talked to other artist about this and noticed suprisingly a lot of them have this problem. If only there were a seminar on finished tattoo photography....Thanks for your help

RE:Taking pictures of fresh tattoos

Ill give a quick rundown on what i do to get good tattoo pics, but also just want to throw out there that my buddy Mario Rosena just came out with a DVD for tattooers, for getting good tattoo pictures for the portfolio, here is a link http://www.reflectedart.com/index.php?p=product&id=29
What I do for good photos: I use the Nikon D-5000, I set it on P, I usually adjust the ISO low, no flash, outside in the shade. If Indoors i would still not use the flash but set the ISO higher, start with 400 or 500, you don't want to go higher than 800 or else it could start to look fuzzy. Take a bunch of pictures in different areas of the shop, different angles and that should get you better pictures. I never get good photos with a flash but i would still try it along with all of my others that i take, but never end up using the one with flash. If you want more info i would recommend picking up Marios DVD.
